What's missing from your technology?

I'm Herman Owens, founding software engineer at Not Another Nerd. I started building websites for small businesses in 2004, and over more than 20 years I've built and led engineering work for Fortune 50 enterprises, telecom companies, universities and the federal government, as both an individual contributor and a leader. As an Eagle Scout, I believe in always leaving things better than I found them, and I still judge my work that way.

Most growing businesses don't need another vendor who talks over their heads. They need someone who will make technology decisions with them, explain the tradeoffs plainly, and then stay to deliver. That's why NAN starts with a fractional CTO and builds a senior-led team around you as the work grows.

Why the name

In computing, NaN means "not a number": the value you get when something is undefined or can't be represented. In large organizations, people can become badge numbers, and their work gets tied to the number instead of the name. NAN is the opposite. Everyone who contributes, whether in a small role or a large one, is a piece the puzzle can't be completed without. We hold the same high standard whether we're individual contributors or leaders.

How we work

  • Plain language over jargon, with decisions explained so you can make them.
  • Senior judgment on every project, not handed off after the sales call.
  • Tests and documentation built in, so you can keep what we build.
  • One accountable partner for strategy, software and delivery.

Mentoring

What I'm proudest of is mentoring. I work with computer science students and career-changers who are breaking into software engineering, and I want NAN projects to give early-career engineers real experience under experienced guidance. If you'd like to be considered, join our talent network.
